Maryland Launches SUN Bucks Program to Combat Childhood Food Insecurity
Maryland is launching the SUN Bucks program this summer to assist families with school-aged children who rely on free or discounted meals during the school year. Eligible families will receive $40 per child each month from June to August, totaling $120 per child for the summer. This initiative aims to alleviate food insecurity for over 500,000 schoolchildren across the state.
To qualify for SUN Bucks, children must attend a Maryland school participating in the Free and Reduced-Price School Meals program or come from households enrolled in SNAP, Temporary Cash Assistance, Medicaid, or similar programs. Children who received free or reduced-price school meals during the 2023-24 academic year automatically qualify, as do those who newly qualify for the 2024-25 school year. The program is funded by $60 million in federal aid highlighting Maryland’s commitment to addressing childhood poverty, according to the report of The US Sun.
