Rising Food Prices Compound SNAP Struggle: Families Face Increasing Difficulty Affording Essentials
According to WashingTonExaminer, A recent report by the Urban Institute shows that many Americans who rely on SNAP are struggling to afford food. In almost all counties, SNAP benefits aren’t enough to buy a basic meal. On average, the cost of a meal is 19% higher than the maximum SNAP benefit. In some places, like cities, the gap is even bigger, sometimes over 70%.
Food prices have been going up a lot, especially in 2023 when they rose by 5.8%. Although this is lower than the year before, it’s still much higher than usual. This makes it even harder for families using SNAP to buy enough food.
