COVID-19 Extension: Friday Deadline for Unclaimed 2020 Tax Refunds Looms Large

According to WBTW, as the deadline gets closer, around 12,000 people in South Carolina still haven’t gotten their tax refunds from 2020. That adds up to over $12.5 million in refunds waiting to be claimed. On average, each person in South Carolina could get about $840 back, which is a lot of money that hasn’t been claimed yet. Across the whole country, the IRS thinks nearly 940,000 people could get a total of $1 billion in refunds.

Usually, the deadline to claim old refunds is in April, but this year, it’s been extended until Friday. This change happened because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which made everything different in 2020. Rodney Foushee, who works for the IRS, says people might have forgotten to file for their refunds because 2020 was such a strange year. He suggests checking the IRS website to see if you’re owed a refund from 2020 by using their tools like the interactive tax tool or the “Where’s My Refund” feature.
