California’s Homelessness Efforts Criticized Amid Lack of Oversight and Ineffective Spending

California’s efforts to deal with homelessness have come under criticism because a state audit found that they’re not keeping track of how well the money is being spent. The audit looked at spending from 2020 to 2023 in California and some cities like San José and San Diego. It found that even though a lot of money was spent, there’s not enough information on what’s working and what’s not. Most of the people who got help ended up back on the streets, showing that the current approach isn’t working well.

Senator’s Concerns Lead to Audit Exposing Lack of Planning and Ineffectiveness in Homelessness Spending

State Senator Dave Cortese asked for the audit because he was worried about the situation after visiting a big homeless camp in San José. The report showed that there’s not enough planning to really solve the problem. Even though California has spent almost $24 billion on homelessness, the number of homeless people keeps going up. The report says the state needs to do more to track how the money is used and make sure it’s helping people find permanent housing.
