This plan was rushed and some Americans are worried because it wasn’t looked at carefully. Republican leaders in the Senate say they got a warning from a big group of business lawyers saying Tennessee’s old tax rules might be illegal. The Senate proposed giving back $1.56 billion in refunds and $393 million in tax breaks totaling $1.95 billion.

Tennessee Senate Grapples with $2 Billion Business Tax Refund Proposal Amid Constitutional Concerns

The trouble started last year when a bunch of businesses said Tennessee’s tax rules might break a part of the U.S. Constitution. Governor Bill Lee first suggested giving businesses $1.2 billion back, but then he changed it to $1.56 billion, plus $393 million in tax breaks.
