Maryland Lawmakers Secure $6 Million to Tear Down Barriers and Reconnect West Baltimore with Druid Hill Park

U.S. Department of Transportation Funds Reimagining of Druid Park Lake Drive for Enhanced Community Access

Lawmakers representing Maryland have successfully secured $6 million in federal funds to aid in reconnecting west Baltimore communities with Druid Hill Park. The funds, allocated by the U.S. Department of Transportation, will be utilized for redesign planning of Druid Park Lake Drive, which has been a major barrier for local residents due to limited pedestrian crossings. Over 60 years ago, the road was expanded to four lanes, prioritizing fast travel over community access, leaving some neighborhoods isolated from the park.

Addressing Historical Inequities: Restoring Access to Druid Hill Park for Baltimore’s Black Communities

The initiative aims to address the longstanding disconnect between Druid Hill Park and nearby communities, particularly those of historic Black neighborhoods such as Auchentoroly Terrace and Reservoir Hill. Senator Ben Cardin emphasized the importance of restoring equitable access to the park, highlighting the Biden Administration’s broader efforts to rectify past infrastructure decisions that have marginalized Black communities. With Baltimore City officials planning to implement safer road designs and increased greenery, the project seeks to create a more inclusive space for cyclists, pedestrians, and transit users, fostering connectivity and safety for all residents. This federal grant, part of a larger effort to tackle divisive infrastructure across Maryland, signifies a step towards rectifying past injustices and enhancing community cohesion.
