Call for Equity: Expanding Tax Credit Eligibility

According to the report of Wavelengths, immigrant supporters led by Haverhill Representative Andy X. Vargas pushed for expanding a tax credit. This credit helps fight poverty and makes education better for low-income families. Around 21,000 to 26,000 households can’t get this credit now because of their immigration status. But with the expansion they could benefit and says the Healthy Families Tax Credits Coalition.

At a meeting with the legislative Black and Latino Caucus supporters said they want this change in the 2025 budget. Representative Vargas who’s part of the caucus was stressed the need for fairness. He said everyone who pays taxes should get treated the same. Immigrant workers pay taxes but many can’t get this credit because they don’t have a Social Security number. The expansion could help families with mixed immigration statuse and making things fairer for them.
