Missouri Lawmakers Pursue Tax Breaks to Aid Families in Accessing Affordable Child Care
Missouri Lawmakers Push Forward Tax Relief Measures to Ease Child Care Burden
Efforts continued on Thursday in Missouri to pass a law that would help families find affordable child care. The Senate Government Accountability Committee approved House Bill 1488 which proposes giving tax breaks to companies, child care providers and families. This means that companies could get money back on their taxes for helping their employees with child care costs. Families who pay for child care could also get some money back on their taxes. The goal is to make child care more affordable and available especially in areas where there aren’t many options nearby.

The bill would let families and companies claim part of their child care expenses on their taxes each year. Families could get back 75% of what they spend up to $200,000. Companies could also get back 30% of what they spend on child care for their employees’ kids up to the same amount. This is meant to help areas where there aren’t many child care options known as “child care deserts.” Many people from different political parties support the bill because they think it’s important to help families find good child care and to make sure parents can work.
