According to des moines register, Iowa lawmakers are considering a bill aimed at revitalizing the state’s film industry by offering tax credits to attract studios and productions. House Study Bill 731 proposes a 30% rebate on qualified spending for larger-budget film projects in Iowa, slated for a two-year pilot period starting in 2025. This initiative follows a previous attempt at film credits in Iowa that was marred by scandal and legal disputes, involving $26 million in improperly distributed credits and resulting in seven convictions. Representative Brent Siegrist expressed confidence in the new proposal’s oversight measures, suggesting it could lead to a successful revival of Iowa’s presence in the film industry.

Tax Credits: A Boost for Iowa’s Film Industry and Economy, Say Studios

Many film companies and studios think the tax credit program is a good idea because it could help Iowa in many ways. Jennifer Kingland from Renovo Media Group says Iowa should try to be more competitive with other states that offer incentives for filming. Sometimes, Iowa loses projects to those states. Lawmakers, like Representative Chuck Isenhart, want to change the bill to help Iowa make more movies locally. They suggest making it easier for smaller-budget projects to get the tax credit. Even though both political parties support the idea, lawmakers need to pass the bill quickly in the House and send it to the Senate before the end of the legislative session.
