Oregon Senator Aims to Protect Families: New Bill Proposes Safer SNAP Benefit Cards with Chips
New Bill Aims to Shield Low-Income Families with High-Tech SNAP EBT Cards
According to NBC Boston, An Oregon senator Ron Wyden, wants to make sure families on tight budgets get more protection when they buy groceries. He’s planning to introduce a new law that suggests adding tiny computer chips to the cards low-income families use to buy food, known as SNAP EBT cards. These cards have been targeted by thieves who use hidden devices to copy the information on the card’s magnetic stripe. With these copied cards criminals can take away the money meant for groceries causing a lot of trouble for families who depend on these funds.
Advancing SNAP Security: Proposed Law Aims for Safer Shopping with Chip Cards and Swift Replacements
Currently, no states use these advanced chip cards for SNAP benefits and the new law wants to change that. Wyden’s law also suggests other improvements like making sure stolen or copied cards get replaced quickly and regularly updating the rules to keep up with the latest technology. The goal is to protect families from losing their SNAP benefits and facing embarrassing situations at the grocery store. Wyden hopes everyone can have equal protection when buying groceries, and the law has support from groups fighting against hunger and poverty.
