Property Taxes and Housing Expenses Pose Challenges for Seniors
Property Tax Credit Fails to Provide – Lack of Updates of Missouri Lawmakers
According to the Kansas City Star, the leader of the Kansas City Shepherd’s Center talks about the problems older people in Missouri are facing. Property taxes and housing costs keep going up making it hard for them to afford to stay in their homes that’s why they want an action of the Missouri lawmakers. There’s something called the Missouri property tax credit meant to help people on fixed incomes but it hasn’t been changed since 2008. This means many older folks and those with disabilities don’t get the help they need to pay for their homes as prices keep going up.

Political Deadlock Impedes Timely Updates to Missouri Lawmakers
Democrats and Republicans recognize the problem but are stuck due to political issues. While laws to freeze property taxes have been passed they haven’t eased concerns about housing insecurity. Organizations like KC Shepherd’s Center receive regular calls from older adults fearing eviction or utility shutoffs highlighting the urgency for Missouri lawmakers to update laws swiftly. Expanding the Missouri property tax credit by adjusting eligibility and amounts can provide ongoing support for low-income older adults and people with disabilities ensuring stability and dignity in their communities as they age.
