Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission Launches Guaranteed Basic Income Program
New Initiative Aims to Combat Poverty in Fresno County Through Monthly $500 Stipends
According to the Business Program, Fresno County is getting ready for a new program called guaranteed basic income. It’s run by the Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission (EOC). Even though Fresno wasn’t part of California’s previous guaranteed basic income program in 2022 the EOC is starting its own. They’ll give $500 each month to 150 adults over 18 in southwest Fresno and Huron. Emilia Reyes who leads the EOC is determined to help fight poverty in the area which affects about one in five people.

Fresno’s Guaranteed Basic Income Program Draws Inspiration from Stockton’s Success
The guaranteed basic income in Fresno is inspired by other successful ones like Stockton’s program led by former Mayor Michael Tubbs. It’s for people in specific ZIP codes who make less than 80% of the average income. Even undocumented folks can join. The guaranteed basic income program got over $1 million from different groups to start and see how well it works. Fresno’s plan to help with money problems using guaranteed basic income is a big deal. Other places in California and the U.S. are trying similar things. If Fresno’s program goes well it could lead to more discussions about helping people in need. Researchers from Fresno State will keep an eye on how things go while supporters hope it makes life better for those struggling financially.
