Premier of New Brunswick’s $300 Payment To Workers, Received Backlash From Critics

Premier of New Brunswick, Blaine Higgs, promised to give $300 as one-time payment to the worker but told reported that he is surprised and disappointed that his government is being criticized for not including everyone, especially the seniors, in the latest cost-of-living measure.

Critics Says, Application Process Is “Onerous”

A $300 one-time payment was announced by the Premier of New Brunswick, Blaine Higgs, in his state of the province speech last month. According to Liberal Leader Susan Holt, criticism began once people realized that it would be an “onerous” application process. To be eligible for the program, an applicant needs to be working earning at least $3,000 last year and live in households with net income not higher than $70,000.

Reported by the Global News, a University of New Brunswick political science professor named J.P. Lewis, has also agreed that to get the $300 one-time payment, the application process is too long and it’s the reason for the Premier of New Brunswick’s blowback.

Premier of New Brunswick Says That The $300 Payment Is A ‘Good News Story’

Premier of New Brunswick, Blaine Higgs, expressed his disappointment that his $75-million program receives backlash. The program aims to help make life more affordable and should be seen as a ‘good news story’. He said the $300 one-time payment will benefit more than 250,000 New Brunswicker.

He said that his government is being criticized for not including everyone, especially seniors, in the latest cost-of-living measure. According to Green Leader David Coon, most vulnerable and those in greatest need are need eligible for the program. Holt questions whether there are really 250,000 workers who can benefit because eliminating the seniors, people on disability and social assistance, that number shrinks and shrinks.
