A Canyon Lake woman, who was filing false tax returns, was recently sentenced to 2 years in prison.

Dawn Marie Munoz, from Canyon Lake, was sentenced to 24 months in prison for aiding in the preparation of false tax returns. The woman who was arrested for filing false tax returns operated a tax preparation business where she would underreport clients’ income.
The arrested woman who was filing false tax returns also convinced them to pay money to the IRS that they didn’t owe. The woman arrested for filing false tax returns would then steal the said money.
After being arrested for filing false tax returns, she pleaded guilty to one count of a 16-count indictment and must pay $227,197 to affected clients. The Canyon Lake woman was arrested for filing false tax returns in April 2022 and sentenced in May 2023.
According to a published article by SmartNews, the case involving filing false tax returns was investigated by the FBI and IRS, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mallory Rasmussen.
