Are Social Security Recipients Getting A Raise in 2024: Caught Off Guard by Unforeseen Tax Hike as COLA Takes Effect

Despite the 8.7% rise in Social Security payouts last year due to the COLA, seniors may have to pay more tax this tax season.

Payments have increased, automatically increasing IRS debt. The number of Social Security recipients subject to taxes has increased significantly. The burden of taxes on seniors has been steadily rising since 1984, when the $25,000 threshold was set in stone.

Shannon Benton, Senior Citizens League Executive Director, raised worry over the large increase in Social Security beneficiaries paying taxes this year. The unexpected tax implications of the latest adjustment have left retirees grappling with the prospect of a significantly larger tax bill, reflecting the biggest jump experienced in decades.
