Who Will Get a Minimum Wage Increase in 25 U.S. States in 2024?

Half of the US will raise minimum wages in 2024, benefiting millions.

Proposed 2024 minimum wage increases in 25 states

California, New York, and Washington will lead $16-per-hour minimum wage increases. It will rise in 22 states on January 1, Nevada and Oregon on July 1, and Florida on September 30.

However, 20 states will keep the federal minimum wage at $7.25 per hour, unchanged since 2009. Even if inflation falls after 2022, minimum wage hikes hurt low-income people. Advocates claim raising the minimum wage helps workers and the economy. Business for Fair Minimum Wage CEO Holly Sklar said low-wage workers promote consumer spending, which businesses need. State-level increments aid workers, businesses, and communities when the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, below the cost of living.

When salaries grow, state and federal minimums differ. Cal, CT, MD, NJ, NY, and WA pay above the federal minimum.
Beyond statewide raises, many towns want minimum wage increases. Denver’s minimum wage will rise to $18.29 on January 1, exceeding Colorado’s $14.42.

20 States Who Will Get Minimum Wage Increase

The 20 states with $7.25 minimum wages are mostly Southern and Midwestern, from Alabama to Wisconsin.
In 2024, these states will boost minimum wages. Most states will raise the baseline wage in January, however, Florida, Nevada, and Oregon will wait until 2024:
