Dollar Tree rival closing two locations after filing bankruptcy – shoppers have last chance to snag discounts

According to The Sun, Two popular discount retailers, Dirt Cheap and a competitor to Dollar Tree, have announced their permanent closures after filing for bankruptcy. Shoppers are seizing the opportunity to grab last-minute bargains as the stores prepare to shut their doors for good.

Bankruptcy and Final Sales

Dirt Cheap, known for its extreme value deals, has officially filed for bankruptcy in Delaware, indicating a tough period for the retailer. As part of the winding down process, all Dirt Cheap locations, including two stores in Tennessee, will be closing. This is a final chance for bargain hunters in Murfreesboro and Smyrna to shop before the stores close for good. While the exact closing dates are not yet known, reports suggest that it could happen by the end of the year.

Store Presence and Discounts

At its peak, Dirt Cheap operated over 60 stores across eight states, with a significant presence in the southern United States, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Texas. All nine of its stores in Louisiana will also close, along with 29 locations in Mississippi and five in Tennessee.

One store near the company’s headquarters in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, has already begun its closing sale, offering discounts of 70% to 90% on items. Customers can find clothes and shoes for less than $5, with further sales being promoted on the company’s Facebook page.

Financial Challenges

The parent company of Dirt Cheap, Channel Control Merchants, cited ongoing financial difficulties as a reason for the closures. Newly appointed Chief Restructuring Officer Jeffrey Martin pointed to stiff competition from major retailers as a contributing factor to the chain’s struggles.

The news of the impending closures has elicited strong reactions from loyal customers. One shopper lamented, “I hate this! I love shopping at Dirt Cheap,” while another reminisced, “It used to be my favorite place to go searching for a deal.” Many fans expressed heartbreak over the loss of the discount retailer, which has been a part of the American retail landscape for over 30 years. Dirt Cheap stores have traditionally sold items returned to major retailers such as Target and Macy’s at significantly reduced prices.

Other Retailer Closures

Dirt Cheap is not alone in facing store closures. Macy’s has announced plans to shut down 150 underperforming locations by the end of 2026 as part of a strategy to drive growth. Additionally, hundreds of Big Lots discount outlets and 7-Eleven convenience stores are also slated to close, with over 400 7-Eleven locations shutting their doors across the nation. Despite these closures, company executives have stated that they are continuing to open new outlets in response to customer demand. A spokesperson emphasized, “We made the decision to optimize a number of non-core assets that do not fit into our growth strategy.”

As the retail landscape continues to shift, shoppers are urged to take advantage of the final sales at Dirt Cheap before it closes its doors for good.
