According to a study by Southwest Journal, the top five most dangerous cities in North Dakota for 2024 were determined based on rates of violent crimes and property offenses per person providing insight into risky areas across the state.

Top 5 Most Dangerous Cities in North Dakota
Fargo
Fargo, North Dakota, tops the list as the state’s most dangerous city, known for its high crime rates alongside its movie fame. With a population of 126,927, Fargo recorded 460 violent crimes per 100,000 people and 3,468 property crimes per 100,000, raising concerns for personal safety and security.
Devils Lake
Devils Lake, situated in northeastern North Dakota, follows closely behind on the danger list, showing an increase in violent crime. Despite its picturesque views, Devils Lake experienced 367 violent crimes per 100,000 residents and 3,665 property crimes per 100,000, indicating a need for attention to public safety.
Mandan
Mandan, located across the river from Bismarck, ranks as the third most dangerous city in North Dakota. With a population of 23,221, Mandan reported 357 violent crimes per 100,000 people and 4,220 property crimes per 100,000, presenting significant challenges in ensuring community safety.
Wahpeton
Wahpeton, known for being home to the world’s biggest catfish, holds the title of the fourth most dangerous city in North Dakota. Despite its appealing attractions, Wahpeton faces a high property crime rate, with residents having a 1 in 37 chance of being a victim in 2020, highlighting the importance of safeguarding belongings.
Williston
Williston, situated in the northwest, rounds off the list as the fifth most dangerous city. With a population of 31,046, Williston recorded 373 violent crimes per 100,000 residents and 2,335 property crimes per 100,000, indicating a need for further efforts to enhance safety in the city.
