According to Southwest Journal, Louisianans have a 1 in 147 likelihood of a violent crime experience. Property crime is reported to be 123,575 per 100,000 or that is a 1 in 37 chance of experiencing property loss. Violent crimes are rising at a rate of 31,500 incidents per 100,000.

It ranked Opelousas, Alexandria, Monroe, Hammond, Marksville, Bastrop, Bogalusa, New Orleans, Gonzales, and Ponchatoula as the top ten Louisiana Dangerous Cities for 2024. These cities exhibit higher levels of property and violent crimes compared to the state and national averages.

Five Safety Tips when in Louisiana Dangerous Cities

Southwest Journal’s article does not mean that every city in Louisiana is inherently dangerous, but when visiting Louisiana dangerous cities, just plan and keep in mind some safety tips.

  • Maintain situational awareness – Be aware of your surroundings that it always be vigilant and observant. Avoid getting distracted by any mobile devices because this will make you an easy target.
  • Plan your trip – Research the areas you plan to visit. Identify safer areas and locations to avoid.
  • Verify your rides – Always double or triple check the license plates and driver profiles before getting in any use ride-sharing services. Allow someone to know where you’re going and who you’re riding with. Avoid accepting rides from strangers.
  • Walk Confidently – Avoid looking like an easy target. Walk confidently and purposefully. Try to stay in well-populated areas.
