First on the list, Terre Haute, located near the Wabash River and the Illinois border, seems peaceful but is one of the most dangerous cities in Indiana. It has a high rate of burglaries, arsons, and vehicle thefts. With a population of 60,604, it ranks highest in property crimes per 100k (4,762) and second highest in violent crimes per 100k (1,381) in the state.

Next on the list, South Bend, famous for the University of Notre Dame and Mayor Pete Buttigieg. It has a notable burglary rate and a significant number of car thefts. It also holds the record for the highest rate of violent crimes in the state, with a population of 102,119. South Bend’s violent crime rate is 1,728 per 100,000 people (the highest), and its property crime rate is 3,663 per 100,000 people (the fourth highest), making it as one of the most dangerous cities in Indiana.

Lastly, Evansville, Indiana’s third-largest city with a population of 116,486 in 2021, is located along the southern border of the state and serves as an economic hub for the tri-state region of Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. However, Evansville ranks as one of the most dangerous cities in Indiana, residents in Evansville face a higher crime risk compared to the state average, with crime rates five times higher per square mile. Both property and violent crime rates in Evansville exceed the national average by a factor of two.
