Mother Arrested Nearly 37 Years After Infant Found Dead in Dumpster

Advancements in DNA Technology Lead to Suspect’s Identification

According to True Crime News, in Riverside, California a 55-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering her newborn daughter almost 37 years ago. The infant was found dead in a plastic bag in a dumpster behind a business on La Sierra Avenue in October 1987. The Riverside County coroner determined the death was a homicide. Despite many efforts to solve the case authorities could not find a suspect at that time. The case remained unsolved until the Riverside Police Department’s Cold Case Unit revisited it in 2020.

Recent advancements in DNA technology helped crack the case. Genetic genealogy company Othram Labs created a detailed DNA profile of the deceased baby which led to identifying potential family members. This investigation pointed to Melissa Avila the baby’s mother as the main suspect. Avila was 19 years old when the crime allegedly occurred.
