Newberry Sentenced to 20 Years for Murder of Disabled Woman

Details Emerge of Brutal Assault and Final Moments of Lynette Lecates

According to True Crime News, in St. Louis, Anthony Newberry 29 has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of Lynette Lecates. Newberry and his co-defendant Darris Williams were involved in a horrific crime on May 23, 2021. They kidnapped Lecates who was disabled, and brutally attacked her after stealing her debit card. Unable to use her card without her PIN they beat her severely and confined her in the trunk of Newberry’s car. Newberry pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder and kidnapping on August 8 with both sentences running concurrently.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office detailed the brutal nature of the crime. Newberry and Williams drove Lecates to several locations, continuing their assault. They even removed her dialysis port and left her near railroad tracks. Lecates was found by police and taken to the hospital where she stayed in a coma for two weeks before dying from blunt force trauma to her head. Her injuries were caused by the extreme violence inflicted by Newberry and Williams.

Newberry Found with Evidence of Crime; Faces Additional Charges

After the attack Newberry was discovered asleep in his car, where police found evidence of the crime. He claimed to have no recollection of the events attributing his memory loss to drug use and blaming Williams. Williams is scheduled to stand trial in October. Newberry also faces additional charges for allegedly holding a corrections officer hostage. St. Louis Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore hopes the sentencing will bring some solace to Lecates’ family and highlighted Newberry’s threat to public safety.
