Authorities Respond to Suspect Brandishing BB Gun, Prompting Lethal Force
According to FOX9 KMSP in Woodbury, Minnesota a dramatic confrontation unfolded in the parking lot of a Target store leaving 63-year-old Donald Roche hospitalized in serious condition after law enforcement officers shot him multiple times. Details from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) revealed that Roche had pointed what appeared to be a “pistol-style BB gun” at officers prompting them to respond with lethal force. Despite its resemblance to a real revolver the BB gun lacked any indicators that it was a toy intensifying the tension of the situation and leading to the escalation of events.
The incident began when Woodbury Police Department officers alerted by license plate readers identified a vehicle linked to a felony-level crime parked in the Target store parking lot. Upon encountering Roche the suspect associated with the vehicle officers moved to apprehend him. However Roche resisted arrest and in the ensuing struggle he brandished what appeared to be a firearm prompting officers to call for backup from the Washington County SWAT team. Despite efforts to negotiate and the deployment of less-than-lethal force Roche continued to pose a threat eventually stepping out of his vehicle and aiming the BB gun at officers leading to the use of deadly force.
