A tragic bus accident during the Easter pilgrimage claimed 45 lives
An eight-year-old child who is the sole survivor is given medical attention
In a recent report by AP News, worshipers traveling from Botswana to an Easter weekend church meeting were killed in a horrific bus accident on a mountain pass in northern South Africa, which claimed 45 lives. As the bus drove off the Mmamatlakala bridge and fell 50 meters into a ravine, it exploded into flames. The bus was transporting pilgrims to Moria, a settlement in the province of Limpopo. The 8-year-old child who had severe injuries and was receiving medical attention was the only survivor among the men, women, and children who perished in the incident.
The intensity of the fire and the serious injuries suffered by numerous passengers impeded search efforts, as smoke billowed from the burned wreckage. President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa expressed sympathy to President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana and promised government support following the tragedy, which took place during the Zion Christian Church’s yearly Easter trip.

Investigation Proceeds Despite Concerns About Road Safety
Authorities are still looking into the crash’s cause, but they are concentrating on the possibility that the driver lost control and the bus crashed through barricades on the edge of the bridge. The road safety campaign in Limpopo was put on hold by South African Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga so that she may visit the scene and offer her sympathies to the bereaved families. Given that there have historically been more traffic deaths during the Easter season, this tragic tragedy serves as a reminder of the risks associated with driving during holidays. Concerns about road safety are raised as South Africa gets ready for the flood of worshippers making their first Easter pilgrimage to Moria since the pandemic’s start, highlighting the necessity of increased awareness and preventative steps to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
