After the Internet Crime Against Children Task Force and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office got a vital cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on December 15, 2023, the investigation gathered momentum. This lead led officials to acquire additional data and record search warrants, including one for Payne’s home.
On January 2, 2024, detectives methodically searched Payne’s residence for proof of the allegations. Despite being interrogated and freed, Payne was under scrutiny during forensic investigations of the material.
