Controversial Verdict as Cannabis-Induced Psychosis Leads to Brutal Stabbing and Lenient Sentence
Spejcher, in a “cannabis-induced psychotic” state, assaulted her 26-year-old lover, Chad O’Melia, at his Thousand Oaks, California, home in 2018.
Spejcher became crazy after using marijuana from a bong, stabbing O’Melia brutally, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. Their relationship was barely weeks old. Spejcher, who turns 33 Thursday, apologized to Sean O’Melia, the victim’s father, before serving his sentence. She said, “My actions have ripped your family apart… Broken and hurting. I regret you never seeing Chad.”
Sean O’Melia was disappointed with the judgment, saying the court gave “everyone in the state of California who smokes marijuana a license to kill someone.” The contentious judgment highlights mental health, drug usage, and legal responsibility issues.
Spejcher’s sentence includes 100 hours of community service to raise awareness of marijuana-induced psychosis. She was also sentenced to suspended jail time with the risk of imprisonment for probation violations. The case has raised questions about the justice system’s response to drug-related crimes and public safety.
