Horrifying details of abuse were shown in court

According to the authorities, Shanda Vander Ark punished Timothy badly by not giving him food, feeding him bread soaked in hot sauce, pouring hot sauce down his throat, and making him take long ice baths. The boy was only 69 pounds when he died from not getting enough food and being too cold.

Paul Ferguson, Vander Ark’s 20-year-old older son, who was also charged with child abuse, spoke out against his mother and said that she had told him to hurt his brother. He said that his mother would text him that Timothy’s symptoms were not real and that she blamed him for the harsh ways she punished him.

Van Ark, who was a law clerk for the Newaygo Circuit Court, said Paul was the one who abused her. He pleaded not guilty. She also said that she loved Timothy and that it was hard to take care of him because he was mentally ill. During her statement, she looked like she was throwing up on the stand.

“Sadistic and tragic” is what the prosecutor calls the case.

Muskegon County Prosecutor D.J. Hilson said that the death of Timothy was “the most disturbing case” they had ever seen in their job and that Vander Ark treated him like he was “no longer human.” He said Vander Ark had a past with child protective services in Oklahoma, where she used to live, but that she had never been told to give up her parental rights or contact with her kids.

Hilson praised the jury for the speed with which they found him guilty on both counts after only an hour and six minutes of deliberation. He said that he hoped the case would bring more attention to the problem of child abuse and neglect and tell people to report any signs of it.

For the murder charge, Vander Ark must serve life in prison without the chance of release. For the child abuse charge, he could get up to 15 years in prison. The date of her sentence is January 18, 2023. A hearing for Paul Ferguson’s child abuse charge is still a ways off.
