Criticism of District Attorney Garza as Released Offender Faces Murder Charges

The Austin Police Association is criticizing Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza for re-arresting homeless man Hilario Adrian, who was freed despite serious assault charges. Adrian, 56, was arrested in April after assaulting another homeless guy. He is suspected of fatally murdering another homeless guy after returning to the streets.

Hilario Adrian, charged with aggravated assault for hitting a homeless man with a golf club and hatchet, was initially held on a $40,000 bond. After the bond was reduced to $1, he was released. Adrian was arrested on Dec. 10 for fatally stabbing another man over meth while out on bond. Back in jail, he faces first-degree murder charges and a $1 million bond. Lax prosecution by District Attorney Jose Garza permits dangerous repeat offenders to be released, threatening public safety, according to the Austin Police Association.

APA President Michael Bullock stresses the preventability of the issue and the necessity for competent law enforcement and prosecution to protect the city.
