63-Year-Old Accomplice in 1999 Murder of Pregnant Girlfriend, Linked to Ex-NFL Player, Passes Away

According to online prison records, Van Brett Watkins died at the age of 63. He assisted Rae Carruth in a 20-year plot to murder her pregnant fiancée, who was dating a former NFL player.

Prison records reveal Van Brett Watkins died. Rae Carruth’s scheme to assassinate his pregnant girlfriend landed Watkins in prison for 20 years. Carruth was an NFL player. He lived for 63 years.

Watkins was at Raleigh’s Central Prison. Keith Acree, a prison officer, claimed he died naturally in a hospital on December 3.

Watkins confessed to helping Carruth murder Cherica Adams in 1999. He served over 50 years in prison. Gunned Adams down. He was convicted of second-degree murder, conspiracy, and other offenses.

Adams was shot in her automobile while leaving a mall in December 1999. A few weeks later, she died. Her child was delivered via emergency Caesarean. Adams was sickly because of his mother. Watkins confessed to authorities that Carruth hired him to murder Adams and her baby.

Carruth was convicted of conspiracy and other charges, but not first-degree murder. He left prison in 2018 after 18–24 years. He was a Panther from 1997 to 1999. A 1997 first-round choice from Colorado, he joined the Panthers.
