Chicago Teachers Union President Faces Criticism for Unsettled Utility Bills Despite High Salary

The Chicago Teachers Union president, Stacy Davis Gates, has been exposed after reports from IPI showed that she has accrued unpaid utility bills amounting to over $5,500. This is strange enough since her annual salary exceeds $289,000. However, a non-profit organization has discovered some documents revealing Davis Gates unpaid financial liabilities. The documents disclosed to the organization indicate that there are substantial arrears related to water, sewer, and trash bills.

By November 7, 2023, these dues were still unpaid, raising concerns about the implications and repercussions of this neglect. Surprisingly, Davis Gates, who was at first willing to set up an amortization arrangement in July 2023, is reported to have failed to pay her bills. This has raised questions about her financial ability. Recently, the IPI has raised allegations of hypocrisy against her. The report notes that she allegedly failed to discharge her duties as the CTU president properly and that she also allegedly neglected personal obligations. These allegations come at a time when she has been vocal in demanding that people with more wealth make their fair and reasonable contribution to tax. 

A recently published report has pointed out that the unpaid bills of Davis Gates are contributing to the financial difficulties of Chicago. The city has been struggling to recover from a large debt amounting to $6.4 billion since 1990. Moreover, the report emphasizes Davis Gates’ debts and how they just exacerbate the financial woes of the city. The latest revelation also increases pressure on this controversial trade union leader by proving some of her critics right. Davis Gates was interviewed by Fox News Digital on the issue of unpaid balances.

After a series of controversies, an incident where a deduction was taken off a residential property in Indiana has been discovered, and the owners are charged with back taxes. Of late, Davis Gates, a former Chicago Public Schools teacher, is suspected to have falsely declared Indiana as his primary residence back in 2007. This controversial move has left many questioning whether he is eligible for certain benefits and privileges. As indicated by the IPI findings, the person would have to pay a higher property tax when the homestead deduction was lost in Indiana.

However, it has just come to light that Davis Gates is trying to defend her son’s enrollment in an exclusive school where she had earlier criticized private education institutions. She used an interview on CNN to clarify her stand, which differed the choice of schools in private institutions from school choice. She recently explained the rationale behind her decision to enroll her children in public schools, saying it was to validate her role within the teachers union while emphasizing the importance of public education in her own home.
