The San Francisco 49ers season got off to a hot start, and their kicker is near the top of the list as to why.
Jake Moody was responsible for 20 of the 49ers’ 32 points on Monday night. He made all six field goal attempts, including two from 50+, two more from 40+, and both point-after attempts.
Ideally, this will be the last time Moody wins the award as the 49ers are converting their scoring chances into touchdowns moving forward. Still, Moody was dependable and showed off plenty of leg strength and accuracy this past Monday night against the New York Jets.
We discussed weaponizing Moody on Tuesday, as teams are attempting longer field goals. In Week 1, there were 23 attempts from 50 + yards, and 21 of those were made. That’s an astonishing number, as teams want to walk away with points in a game where you’re not guaranteed many possessions.
We’ll see if Moody attempting multiple 50+ yard field goals is reoccurring this season and how his accuracy impacts Kyle Shanahan’s play-calling.
