As it moved north on Sunday after making landfall in Mexico’s Baja California, Tropical Storm Hilary issued a flash flood warning for a number of Southern California locales.
Warnings were still in effect
Read the following from an emergency message issued to smartphones in the Los Angeles area just before noon PT: Do not attempt to travel unless you are evacuating a flooded area or are required to do so by a court order.
Reported in USA Today, warnings were still in effect throughout the evening for parts of the counties of Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura.
But even earlier in the day, the storm began to cause problems for travelers with flight cancellations and delays at airports all around the state, especially by Southwest.
The Hollywood Burbank Airport advises on its website to check with your airline for information on any delays or cancellations caused by the storm before you arrive at BUR. Make careful to give yourself extra time to enter and exit the airport.
Additionally, not just aircraft and highways are affected. A few locations in Southern California shuttered early on Sunday because of the storm.

Tropical Storm Hilary causes cancellations on Southwest flights.
According to FlightAware, which records flight status in real-time, Southwest has canceled more than 700 flights scheduled for Sunday and close to 190 flights slated for Monday.
According to the airline, which is the largest carrier in California, proactive changes were made to the flight schedule over the course of the weekend. Customers who were impacted were also informed of the travel advisory, which gives them more freedom to self-serve rebook on Southwest.com. As the storm intensifies, they will continue to provide information, and they are prepared to help and make accommodations for them both during and after the storm.
Customers with flights into, out of, or through the following locations on Sunday or Monday are eligible for the travel waiver. See the list of flights at USA Today.
Within 14 days of their original travel dates, customers may fly standby or rebook between their initially reserved cities without incurring additional fees.
Additionally, Southwest passengers who have reservations for flights on Sunday or Monday into, out of, or through any airport in the Los Angeles region may change their itinerary without incurring any additional costs. Burbank, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Ontario, Orange County, and Santa Barbara airports are among those that qualify.
Although there are fewer cancellations due to Tropical Storm Hilary, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines, and United Airlines are still providing travel waivers.
Flight cancellations by airport
Over a fifth of the Sunday flights at many Californian airports are being canceled. These are the postponements as of six o’clock. Sunday, according to FlightAware. Visit USA Today to view the list.
Additionally, on Sunday, 11% of flights into and out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and more than 20% of flights into and out of Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas have been canceled.
