The San Francisco 49ers returned to practice on Wednesday, and so will Christian McCaffrey — in a limited fashion. Should it be viewed as a positive sign that McCaffrey is limited and not entirely out of practice? Head coach Kyle Shanahan said, “I’m not a doctor, either, but I take that as a positive.”
Some fans believe the best thing for McCaffrey is to place him on the Injured Reserve List. That way, his calf/Achilles injury no longer lingers. But Shanahan isn’t thinking in those terms:
“No, I’ve never considered that. I was considering him to play last week, so I’m definitely not thinking of four weeks off.”
McCaffrey told reporters in the locker room that his mindset is that he’s playing on Sunday. Here’s why:
“That’s how I am every week. I’m not lying. I think as soon as a player says, ‘Maybe I’ll play, maybe I won’t,’ that’s not a good mentality to go into a week with when you’re kind of on the fence. So, for me, I’m ready to go.”
McCaffrey seemed annoyed when asked if the playing surface had anything to do with his availability in Week 2: “If you can’t run on turf, you can’t run on the field. If you can’t run on grass, you can’t run on turf. If you can go, you can go.”
Shanahan says there won’t be anything different with Trent Williams or the team as they transition to preparing for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Wednesday’s practice will be half-speed, but that’s only because the Niners are two days removed from a game.
