49ers injury report: Christian McCaffrey was a limited with a calf/Achilles

The San Francisco 49ers had their first injury report of the season. It’s a day later than usual because they’re playing on Monday night. Here’s Thursday’s official injury report:

Did not participate:

DE Yetur Gross-Matos (knee)
LB Dee Winters (ankle)

Limited:

LG Aaron Banks (finger)
RB Isaac Guerendo (groin)
S Talanoa Hufanga (knee)
WR Jauan Jennings (ankle)
RB Christian McCaffrey (calf/Achilles)

Full:

LB Tatum Bethune (ankle)
RG Spencer Burford (hand)
P Mitch Wishnowsky (back, right knee)

Shanahan said McCaffrey’s injury isn’t new. When you see “Achilles,” it’s easy to freak out, but we’re talking about the same region of the lower leg where the muscles and tendons work in tandem.

During his press conference on Thursday, Shanahan said, “Huf has got a possibility this week. Greenlaw, we’re going to have to wait on.” It would be a mild upset if the 49ers trotted out Hufanga on Week 1.

The good news is neither Brandon Aiyuk nor Trent Williams are limited this week. Shanahan said, he’d be surprised if Aiyuk played 98 percent of the snaps as he did last year, but they are evaluating both players as the week goes along and neither are being held back.
