BARROW COUNTY, Ga. (TCN) — Law enforcement confirmed a suspect is in custody following a shooting at Apalachee High School early Wednesday morning that left multiple people dead and injured.
Barrow County Jud Smith said in a news conference that law enforcement first received news of an active shooter at the school at approximately 9:30 a.m. Smith said there were “multiple injuries,” but did not elaborate on the extent or seriousness. CNN reports helicopters were seen airlifting victims to the hospital. The school was placed on lockdown, but students were later released to their parents and allowed to leave campus.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the case. They announced a suspect was arrested and that more information will be shared at a later press conference.
Smith called the shooting an “evil thing” and said the investigation remains “very, very fluid.”
CNN, WSB-TV, and other news outlets are reporting that four people have been killed, but law enforcement has not confirmed that number yet.
