Casualties reported in school shooting in US state of Georgia | Gun Violence News

DEVELOPING STORY,

At least two reported dead and four injured in southern state of Georgia, in the latest school shooting to rattle US.

Law enforcement has responded to a shooting at a high school in Georgia, in the southern United States, with reports of at least two people killed as details continue to emerge.

The news outlet MSNBC reported on Wednesday that two people had been killed and four injured at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, citing an unnamed law enforcement source.

“At approximately 10:23 AM officers from multiple law enforcement agencies and Fire/EMS personnel were dispatched to the high school in reference to a reported active shooting,” the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office said that a suspect is being held in custody, and the news outlet Reuters reported that a spokesperson for the school district said the situation is now under control.

Live television coverage shows ambulances appearing on the scene, and the outlet CNN reported seeing a helicopter landing to evacuate wounded victims.

The White House said that President Joe Biden has been informed of the incident, and the FBI, the US domestic intelligence agency, said that it has dispatched officers to the scene.

The school shooting is the latest to rattle the United States, where they have become dismally frequent affairs that underscore the country’s stasis on the contested question of gun violence as conservative lawmakers continue to block calls for additional firearms regulations.

The US Surgeon General declared gun violence a public health crisis in June, saying that it has “led to loss of life, unimaginable pain, and profound grief for far too many Americans”.
