“Honestly, to be real, I felt more compelled to come back after that anything,” Williams said. “Because I’ve never experienced that in my playing career to have a teammate, shot. So in my mind, I’m like, Man, I just want to get back, get around the team.”
He recalled meeting Pearsall briefly during his “30 minutes” at 49ers OTAs. Williams said Pearsall came up to him and introduced himself, and that Pearsall “stood out” for that. Williams said he “instantly felt this vibe” about how “genuine” Pearsall was.
“So as soon as I seen that happen, I’m like, man, I just want to get back, I just want to be a voice in his ear, let him know everything gonna be alright, be there for the team,” Williams said.”
49ers experience needed shift in positivity as Week 1 approaches
“Williams does not need a lot of time to get ready for the regular season. Team sources felt he would know exactly when he could report to the team in order to not put the start of the regular season in danger.
The 49ers have a practice scheduled for Tuesday. After a day off, they have a full week of preparation in order to face the New York Jets on Monday night in Week 1.
Aiyuk is back. Williams is back. And Pearsall’s prognosis is encouraging, too.”
Pearsall’s FaceTime call after shooting lifted up 49ers at team party
“Earlier in the day, it appeared as if the party would get canceled.
“I didn’t want to do anything,” 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings said. “I didn’t want to go anywhere.
“I sent a couple texts to him. I was just glad to know he was OK.”
Word got around to members of the team that Pearsall, who was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list Monday and ruled out for at least the first four weeks of the season, was in good condition.
Then, everyone invited to the party received the text message alert that the party would go on. And the highlight of the night was when Pearsall was able to connect remotely with his teammates.
“Kind of a cool moment,” Lynch said “We were able to pipe Ricky into the party, and he FaceTimed the entire group. That show of love and respect was a real special moment for our team.”
Second-year receiver Ronnie Bell said everyone seemed to benefit from that moment.
“He was excited to see us and talk to us, so it was real cool,” Bell said of Pearsall. “I think it definitely lifted everybody. I felt like everybody had a weight on their shoulders with what was going on. Then, to hear from him and see him, I feel like it lifted everybody up. For us to get together and see him like that was big time.”
“It’s kind of uncharted territory,” Lynch said. “It’s not every day you deal with something like this. We felt if it was just this scenario and he hadn’t had the other shoulder and all that, it was just a lot to work through, if you were just looking at it physically.
“I thought it was too much to ask, and I relied on our medical experts, and they felt it was too much to ask for him to come back within the next four weeks.”
49ers’ Ricky Pearsall wanted to assure teammates he was OK — so he showed up at work (paywall)
“I tried to contact him to see if he was OK, if the rumors were fake or they were true,” Cowing said while seated at his locker Tuesday. “I didn’t hear anything back, so at that moment my adrenaline started going up a little bit.”
That was the initial plunge Cowing and his 49ers teammates felt around 4 p.m. Saturday. There was shock, disbelief, a ball of dread in their stomachs. An hour later, however, the reports about Pearsall already had taken a more optimistic tone — he was in stable condition, and his life wasn’t in danger — and the outlook has improved even more in the days since the incident.”
Branch: 49ers react to how Ricky Pearsall survived shooting: ‘Nothing short of miraculous’ (paywall)
“Ultimately, we felt the No. 1 thing we had to be concerned with was Ricky’s well-being: physically, mentally and emotionally,” Lynch said. “And we ultimately decided that the best thing for Ricky was to have a little bit of time. … We have tremendous (mental-health) resources. We have made it available. Ricky embraces that. It’s going to be his call, but we’ll help him through this in every way.”
Lynch expressed his appreciation for hospital staff and the San Francisco Police Department, singling out Sgt. Joelle Harrell, who was the first to reach Pearsall after he was shot. Harrell reassured Pearsall, praying with him, when he asked her if he was going to die.
“She was there for him at a real rough time,” Lynch said, “and I know how appreciative Ricky is of that.”
Lynch was asked whether Harrell would be at Levi’s Stadium when the 49ers open the regular season Monday night against the Jets.
“I hope so,” he said, smiling. “Stay tuned.”
49ers GM John Lynch discusses weekend incident involving Ricky Pearsall
“Here is everything he said.”
Report: Deebo, 49ers restructure contract to create cap space
“The 49ers continued their quest to create additional 2024 salary-cap space, reportedly restructuring star wide receiver Deebo Samuel’s contract after also making alterations to defensive tackle Maliek Collins’ deal on Tuesday.
Samuel and the 49ers agreed to a contract restructure that creates an additional $16.4 million in cap space, ESPN’s Field Yates reported Tuesday.”
How 49ers’ Trent Williams forfeited millions in fines — and cashed in big time (paywall)
“That, then, made it hard for Williams to be away from the 49ers’ facility until Tuesday, when he arrived on his private jet from Texas just hours before practice.
“(The holdout) let me know that I’m still hungry,” Williams said. “I still miss the game. It was depressing watching everyone go through camp, joint practices, the preseason. You think of a kid not being able to go out for recess and having to watch everyone through the window.””
Brandon Aiyuk runs through practice with San Francisco 49ers
“I’m not going to lie: I made it a little bit more difficult than it needed to at the end,” Aiyuk said in his first comments since signing his new deal. “I mean, it was like that for me, I’m not going to say the whole entire time, but for about the past month, I think we were pretty good.”
Farm life on hold, 49ers counting on Leonard Floyd to add punch to pass rush (paywall)
“Walker excitedly detailed the moves Floyd has incorporated. The cross chop. The side scissors. The pull through.
“It’s been a huge mindset change with Flo,” Walker said. “The technique comes first and his athleticism is just the cherry on top. … He’s always thinking about pass rush. One day we were just hanging out, kind of a goodbye thing — he was about to head off to training camp — and he says, ‘Dez, man, I just can’t stop thinking about sacks.’ I’ll tell you this, if you start talking about technique, you will get Flo talking. You will get Flo talking all day.”
Indeed, when asked last week about the specifics of his pull-through move, Floyd immediately grabbed a reporter’s T-shirt to begin a helpful demonstration. Floyd has explained that he often prays, not only because it’s a fundamental part of his faith, but because it momentarily stops visions of tracked-down quarterbacks that run through his head.
“You can’t get no sacks without faith,” Floyd said. “I swear you can’t. You’ve got to give some kind of time throughout the week to studying spiritual things to keep everything where it’s supposed to be. If I think about sacks all week, I’m not going to get one. It helps me take my mind off it.”
