During the power outage in Cleveland, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and other local organizations are providing food, water, and additional resources.
Food Resources During Power Outage
According to the report of Signal Cleveland, residents are dealing with food safety and availability issues. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that food in a closed refrigerator stays safe for about four hours. Frozen food can last up to 48 hours if the freezer is full and 24 hours if it’s half full. To help with food needs, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank will deliver meals to different city recreation and health centers on Friday at 1 p.m. You can pick up food at the Zelma Watson George Recreation Center on the East Side and the Cudell Recreation Center on the West Side among other places.
There are other resources available for those in need. The Cleveland Liberation Center is offering meals, activities for children, and a family-friendly movie. Gatewood Home is providing free wifi, water, coffee, and recreational facilities. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is also giving out produce and pantry items at various locations from August 9 to August 13. Some of these sites are MetroHealth Parma and Bethany Baptist Church. For more details and you can call the Food Bank’s help center at 216-738-2067.
Emergency Assistance for Food and Hydration Needs During Power Outages
If you use SNAP benefits, you can get replacements for spoiled food if the power was out for more than four hours. You need to document the spoiled food with photos or receipts and fill out the required form. FirstEnergy is also offering free ice and water at several Giant Eagle stores in Cuyahoga County to help with food and hydration needs during the outage. This service will be available until August 14 or while supplies last.
