Michigan Expands Rx Kids Program with $20 Million Funding Boost

Shaefer declared “We lifted millions of children out of poverty for that brief shining moment.” “Families with children experienced the lowest level of food hardship that we have ever seen.” Families’ credit scores reached an all-time high but Shaefer also pointed out the alarming reverse that happened when the original program was terminated. Families had more food difficulties, child poverty rates reached their highest point in a single year, and financial security declined. The goal of the Rx Kids program‘s expansion is to address these problems and offer families ongoing assistance. The data presents an unfavorable image of the difficulties that many Michigan families confront. 17.6% of children under the age of 18 live in households that are below the federal poverty level, according to the University of Michigan.
