Discover the Surprising State That Tops the List
According to WNCT, Delaware has been named the best state to retire in 2024. This is surprising because many people don’t think of Delaware as a retirement destination. But Bankrate, a company that analyzes data, found that Delaware has many advantages that make it a great place to retire. These advantages include good healthcare, low taxes, affordable home insurance, and pleasant weather.
What Makes Delaware Stand Out as a Retirement Destination
Bankrate looked at five important things when deciding which states are the best for retirement. These things are how affordable it is to live there, how well people feel about their lives, the quality of healthcare, the weather, and how safe it is. Delaware did well in all of these areas, which helped it become the top state.
Affordability is Key for West Virginia’s Second-Place Finish
West Virginia came in second place because it is very affordable. However, it has a problem with healthcare – it’s not very good. Georgia and South Carolina did better this year because they are more affordable too. Missouri became one of the top five because it’s very cheap to live there. Florida is a popular place for retirees, but it’s not as good as some of the other states because of high home insurance costs and potential electricity bills.

Why Some States Are Not Ideal for Retirees
On the other hand, some states are not good places to retire. Alaska is one of these states because it’s very expensive and has poor healthcare and crime rates. California is another state that’s not good for retirees because it has high taxes and housing costs. People need to make almost $200,000 a year to buy a typical home there.
Retirement Planning Requires Careful Consideration of Multiple Factors
The report shows that it’s important to think about many factors when planning for retirement. One of these factors is healthcare costs, which can be very high. Western states like Idaho, Colorado, Washington, Utah, and Oregon have good healthcare at a reasonable price.
