Virginia’s new tax credit available until 2027.
New Tax Credit Encourages Responsible Gun Ownership
In 2023, Virginia introduced a tax credit to improve gun storage safety. This credit helps people save on taxes when buying gun safes and locks. In its first year, 1,905 Virginians used the credit. Lori Haas from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions said easy access to guns can lead to impulsive actions causing harm.
Haas explained that gun safes and locks create a delay allowing time to reconsider impulsive actions. She highlighted that many violent acts happen without thought and that securing guns can prevent such incidents. This is especially important in homes with children, like the case where a six-year-old in Newport News brought his mother’s unsecured gun to school and shot a teacher.

The tax credit, available until 2027 encourages more gun owners to use safety devices. Haas emphasized that children do not understand the deadly consequences of using guns so it is crucial for parents to secure their firearms. Virginia aims to reduce preventable tragedies by promoting gun safety devices, according to the report of DC News Now.
