A Delaware County resident named Diane Henry expressed her excitement about the larger rebate check she will receive for property tax and rent paid in 2023. She shared that the extra money will allow her to purchase new items for her home and support her family by covering essential bills.

The Property Tax and Rent Rebate program has been a crucial support system for many senior citizens and Americans with disabilities in Pennsylvania for nearly two decades. Governor Josh Shapiro recently spoke at the Upper Darby Senior Center in Delaware County and he emphasized that the Property Tax and Rent Rebate program was expanded last year to better match the rising cost of living. Governor Shapiro highlighted that under the new law more Americans now qualify for relief and those who were already eligible will receive more substantial rebates. He mentioned that many recipients would see their rebate amounts double compared to previous years. The state will begin distributing the rebates starting July 1. The governor announced that 442,000 seniors would receive a total of $266 million in property tax and rent relief this year which is a significant increase from the previous year’s 283,000 recipients who received $132 million in relief.

Furthermore, Shapiro noted the importance of this assistance and stated that sending out checks to hundreds of thousands of seniors across Pennsylvania is a significant achievement. However, he also pointed out that 125,000 eligible seniors have not yet applied for the rebates. Renters and homeowners must check if they qualify for up to $1,000 in rebates with the amount depending on their income to determine eligibility. This expanded support aims to ease the financial burden on seniors enabling them to make ends meet and maintain a better quality of life.
