Eligible Americans to Receive $500 Monthly Under New Program
Americans living in two specific zip codes in Fresno County, California, will receive $500 each month for a year through a new program aimed at reducing poverty. This summer, 150 families will start getting these payments.
Targeted Areas and Application Process
The program is for families with young children (age five and under) in southwest Fresno (zip code 93706) and Huron (zip code 93234). Applications closed on May 15, 2024. To qualify, families had to earn $30,615 or less in 93706 or $35,103 or less in 93234.
Selection and Notification of Recipients
More than 150 families applied, and 150 were chosen by lottery. Selected families were notified by email, phone, and text by a Fresno EOC Navigator. They had 48 hours to respond or lose their spot.
No Impact on Other Benefits
Recipients can use the $500 monthly payments however they want, and this extra income won’t affect their eligibility for other benefits like food stamps (CalFresh) and CalWORKs.
Additional Guaranteed Income Programs Across the US
In Washington, D.C., the non-profit Bread for the City is giving up to $2,000 per month to eligible residents through its CashRx program, funded by a $400,000 Health Equity grant. This will last for 12 months.
New Initiatives in Chicago and Other Cities
Chicago is planning a new guaranteed income program. Another city in California will soon start sending payments of up to $725 per month to eligible residents.
One-Time Payments for Spoiled Food
Some residents might qualify for a one-time payment of $500 to cover the cost of spoiled food showing that various forms of financial help are available across the country, according to the report of The US Sun.
