California lawmakers are making strides in establishing reparations for Black residents. Led by State Sen. Steven Bradford, three key bills aim to address historical racism. The first bill creates a fund using state reserves to compensate descendants of enslaved or pre-19th century free Black individuals. Bradford emphasizes these aren’t acts of charity but fulfilling overdue promises, according to the report of USA Today.

Another bill addresses property seizures through eminent domain. It establishes a process for compensation from the state for racially motivated land seizures. The Office of Legal Affairs will review applications ensuring accountability.
