Ohioans Risk Losing $32.9 Million in 2020 Tax Refunds

According to NBC4, although this year’s tax season is over there’s an important deadline that taxpayers need to be aware of. Mark Steber, Chief Tax Information Officer for Jackson Hewitt Tax Services warns that those who are due a refund from 2020 must act quickly. The deadline to file and claim your 2020 tax refunds is May 17. Steber highlights a crucial fact: taxpayers have a three-year window to file their returns and claim any tax refunds. For those who haven’t filed their 2020 tax refunds yet the clock is ticking. If you miss the May 17 deadline you won’t be able to collect any tax refunds that might be due. “There’s a lot of money waiting for a lot of Americans,” Steber said. He pointed out that approximately one million Americans across the country have not claimed a staggering $1 billion in tax refunds from 2020. Specifically in Ohio an estimated 31,400 residents haven’t filed their returns potentially missing out on nearly $32,939,900 in tax refunds. On average that’s about $909 per person.

Steber notes that a significant number of Americans are unaware they might qualify for a refund. Misinformation is partly to blame. For example some Americans believe that if they didn’t earn more than $15,000, they don’t need to file. While it’s true that filing may not be required you still need to file to claim any refund due. To avoid missing out Steber suggests getting help from a licensed tax professional. “They can help you navigate the process, reduce your tax liability maximize your tax refunds and even find money you didn’t know you were entitled to,” he explained. Missing this deadline means more than just losing a refund. Many low- and moderate-income workers could miss out on the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). In 2020 during the pandemic this credit was worth as much as $6,600 for those with qualifying children.
