Claudia Iveth Gutierrez Mendez, who owns Hamburguesas El Gordo, is in big trouble with the law. She’s facing serious charges for not doing her taxes right. The charges say she filed false tax returns, didn’t pay taxes, and didn’t even file tax returns at all. Her restaurants in St. Paul, West St. Paul, and Minneapolis got audited, and it turns out she owes over $260,000 in taxes to the state.

She’s 40 years old and lives in Maplewood. Even though she got called to court, she’s not in jail. Her first court date is on June 18. The charges say the Minnesota Department of Revenue found problems in her tax papers from March 2018 to November 2022. They say she didn’t report all her sales and didn’t pay all the taxes she owed. Plus, she didn’t file any tax papers from December 2022 to February 2023, even though her restaurants were still open and collecting taxes from customers.
