Senator Mike Crapo’s Objections Halt Progress on Tax Credit Bill, Stalling Relief for Working Families

The progress on a bipartisan law that would provide up to a $2,000 yearly tax credit per child to working families has been stopped due to objections from Idaho Senator Mike Crapo. The bill passed quickly in the Republican-led House but has stalled in the Senate where Democrats hold a slim majority. Senator Crapo, along with a few other Republican senators, has raised concerns about certain parts of the bill, particularly regarding the rollout of the child tax credit, according to the report of Idaho Stateman.

Senator Crapo’s concerns mainly revolve around a “look-back” policy in the bill allowing workers to use a prior year’s income to qualify for a more considerable child tax credit. He argues that this part amounts to entitlement spending rather than a tax break and could encourage people to leave the workforce. Despite reassurances from nonpartisan organizations that this wouldn’t be the case, Crapo remains firm in his opposition to the policy and seeks changes to the bill to address his concerns.
