Elizabethtown School Board Deliberates Financial Assistance for Low-Income Seniors
Board Members Contemplate Property Tax Increase to Fund Senior Tax Rebate
During the Elizabethtown School Board meeting on March 26, discussions revolved around the proposed property tax rebate for low-income senior citizens as part of the draft budget for 2024-25. The board sought feedback from district residents regarding the rebate, which aims to provide financial assistance to seniors aged 65 and older with incomes below certain thresholds. If approved, eligible seniors could receive either a $500 or $250 tax rebate, depending on their income level. The proposal was modeled after a state rebate program and could potentially benefit around 825 applicants, costing the district an estimated $337,500.
When evaluating the adoption of the tax rebate, the board also considered the potential impact on property taxes. The majority of board members expressed a readiness to raise property taxes by 3.75% to assist support the rebate program, resulting in an annual increase of $141 for the average residential property. However, more budget modifications were required due to a shortfall of around $876,000, even with the anticipated tax increase. Board members were divided on whether they supported the rebate scheme, with some voicing worries about its financial ramifications and the need for more public input before reaching a decision.
District Residents Encouraged to Provide Input on Senior Tax Rebate Proposal
The board also approved the acquisition of a new food service vehicle and renewed the annual food service contract with Metz Food Service Management Co. in addition to discussing the tax refund. A number of other personnel changes were allowed, such as the resignation of Adam Bergens, the director of buildings and grounds, and the retirement of Bear Creek Principal Jacques Viau. These choices were taken in order to adapt to district-wide changes and guarantee efficient administration of resources and services for personnel and students.
