Navy Relieves Commanding Officer of South American Unit Due to ‘Loss of Confidence’ in Leadership

Navy Removes Commander of South American Unit Amid Leadership Concerns; Reasons Remain Undisclosed

Capt. Abigail Yablonsky Marter was relieved by the Navy of her duties as the commander of the Naval Medical Research Unit South, the only Navy command located in South America. “Loss of confidence” in her leadership abilities was the reason for Marter’s relief. She started her Navy service in 1996 as a nurse. Her departure was cited by the Navy as “performance related” rather than “misconduct related,” however they did not give any specific explanation.

Navy Appoints Interim Commander Following Removal of Capt. Marter; Continues Vigilance in Leadership Accountability

Cmdr. Michael Prouty will serve as the acting commanding officer until a permanent replacement is named. Marter, who holds multiple awards and degrees, including a doctorate, will be reassigned to the Naval Medical Research Command temporarily. This removal marks at least the sixth firing of a Navy commanding officer in 2024, emphasizing the Navy’s commitment to accountability and leadership standards.
