North Carolina: $29 Million in Unclaimed Federal Tax Refunds Await Claim
27,500 North Carolinians Yet to File 2020 Tax Returns, Missing Out on $29 Million
As the tax deadline rapidly approaches, millions of dollars in federal tax refunds remain unclaimed in North Carolina, according to recent statements from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). An estimated $29 million in refunds is still waiting to be claimed in the state, with approximately 27,500 individuals yet to file their 2020 federal tax returns. The average refund for the 2020 tax year stands at $932, highlighting the significant financial benefits that North Carolinians may be missing out on. Moreover, the IRS revealed that as many as 175,000 eligible residents of North Carolina have yet to claim the COVID-era Recovery Rebate Credits for the years 2020 and 2021, commonly referred to as stimulus payments. Despite the looming deadline, taxpayers are reassured that there is no penalty for claiming a refund through a late-filed tax return. With the deadline set for May 17, there is still time for individuals to claim any unclaimed 2020 federal refunds and access the financial relief they are entitled to.

North Carolina Residents, Don’t Miss Out on COVID-era Economic Impact Payments
To facilitate the process of accessing potential stimulus payments, the IRS encourages taxpayers to create an IRS Online Account, where they can check if they have received any COVID-era Economic Impact Payments. As the deadline draws nearer, North Carolinians are urged to take advantage of these resources and ensure they receive any owed refunds and stimulus payments before time runs out.
